Multiple Enthusiasms

Infinite jest. Excellent fancy. Flashes of merriment.

I have to admit that in the past few years, I’ve become less interested in Christmas and holiday festivities. I’d say it began two years ago, the first Christmas I spent alone in Hollywood, but really I think it started before that. Thing is, it’s happened, in a way, to all holidays, at least for me; I’ve always been the sort of person who gets totally excited about doing things right up until the very moment you tell me I have to do them, at which point I get all stubborn like the Taurus I am and dig in my heels and refuse to budge. Thanksgiving, anymore, only makes me wonder why more people aren’t grateful every day of the year, for example, and Christmas? Christmas, just lately, only reminds me I live in a society where people shoot people in a Toys ‘R Us and frenzied shoppers trample employees at Walmart.

This particular Christmas seems particularly turbulent, in fact, mainly because of the economy. I read the comics page of the Philadelphia Inquirer this morning, and no less than three of the comics contained “jokes” about the current “financial crisis.” The headlines are all over the place today; jobless claims are way up, while consumer spending is way down, and most analysts say we’re just in for tougher times ahead.

Still, I can’t help but feel some hope in that.

No, no, really.

All based on this picture:

Yes, that’s Animal.

And apparently, he was speeding. In an Audi TT.

Actually, what really seems to be happening is that there’s a British driver speeding past cameras in Bavaria. But since he (or she) is British, his (or her) steering wheel’s on the wrong side of the car, so that the cameras, which are set up to catch the driver’s side of the car, are actually catching the passenger’s side. Which would be neat enough, because if dude (or dudette) left it as it was, those crazy Kraut police would be trying to slap the invisible man with some speeding tickets.

But no. Because dude (or dudette) is awesome, and instead of just letting the cameras capture an empty passenger seat, he (or she) is driving with a freakin’ Muppet!.

I would totally pay real, cash money to see a cop pull said car over and then approach the window only to find himself talking to a Muppet.

I wonder if the driver (or driverette) is also taking advantage of the carpool lane.

At least he (or she) chose the right Muppet. I mean, Animal? Totally:

But, like, one would never expect, say, Gonzo or Scooter to be speeding.

Because, of course, Scooter would be riding a scooter.

And Gonzo? He’s airborne. On a motorcycle:

‘Cause that’s how he rolls.

He should have been:

A brilliant mash-up of the RickRolling Internet thing. I’d try to explain it for those unfamiliar, but I’m not all together certain myself. Something about disguising a link to his “Never Gonna Give You Up” YouTube video in a comment to make people click on it, and I guess annoy them.

But my question is, whoever disliked seeing a Rick Astley video?

I remember I was in Miami, visiting my uncle, the first time I saw this video/heard this song, which I’ve always completely loved:

I mean, come on, how cool was the Rick? Conan O’Brian has Rick hair. Long before Parker Lewis, Rick Astley couldn’t lose.

Here’s “Never Gonna Give You Up” Popped Up:

Which shows Rick Astley wore raincoats better than Columbo.

I wish I could dance like Rick Astley.

That’d be so awesome.
